The furious 4Runner is a sub-10 MACHINE! Sub-10 mpg, that is. At least gas is cheap right now. Just filled her up from almost empty for $30.

I get sub 10 towing, but my all time high (low) was offroading in canyonlands recently with like 8 I think.

The lowest I’ve gotten in the Sequoia was just under 11, driving 2 hours home in traffic.

How did you manage sub-10 mpg in a 4runner? I get 15-16 in my land cruiser even when speeding.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:19 |

What do you get if you drive normally?
In the Sequoia, it’s around 14-15 city and 17-19 highway. The Ram is 15-16 city and 19-22 highway

Yeah, I'm not towing anything or off-roading. This is solely city driving, to and from school.

Traffic on the afternoons in Memphis can be a pain in the ass but not a two hours pain in the ass. This is just driving to and from my school (about 5 or so miles away from home one way)

How? I average high 11’s in mine with a lift and bigger tires. It’s also thrashed daily, and needs a crap ton of work.

1. It’s a ‘95 with the 3VZ and the A341H; 2. It's entirely city driving; and 3. I ask myself that question as well

13. Always 13

hooray 3vz-e!
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:24 |

I dunno. I'm only driving it in the city, but that's still really low. The only thrashing during that wholes tank was a single, short brakestand in the school parking lot with some friends for lulz. And nothing big either. Like, 10 seconds tops. I really don't know.

I had a '98 with the 5vz (3.4L) and got mid-teens while living in Chicago. You may be in desperate need of a top down tune-up.

We had to put in a new one two years ago and I just found out that buying a gently used 1UZ would have been half of what we paid for the refurb 3VZ. Although we’d have to get an adapter plate and probably a little bit of fab for engine mounts, I think it’d be worth it. I don’t know if gas mileage would be any different, but hey, V8 4Runner. If only, if only.

Engine only has a few k miles on it.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:33 |

HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO A BRAKESTAND!?! Also, I do a bit of city driving as well.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:35 |

I looked into get a 1uz in my 80 series but because I would need a carb certificate I would have to have a certified shop do it, I asked slee what he charges and it was 20 grand. NOPE!
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:40 |

I honestly have no idea. I kept my foot on the brake on gently applied gas, and behold, one-tire fire. I only tried because one of my friends who has an ‘06 F150 with a 5.4 did a really nice one, and another one of my friends with a Z3 2.5 tried and failed miserably and was taunted, but I felt the need to back up my taunts. So yeah. On 33s, I did a brakestand.

Ouch. Glad I'm not in Cali!

Utah...if you would believe it...

WTF??? CARB has authority outside of CA?
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:44 |
|
Sure, lots of states have signed on.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:46 |

Ugh, that's terrible. Any pre-swapped ones outside of Utah for sale though?
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:48 |
|
New or rebuilt? Also do you have bigger tires or different diff gears that may be throwing off the calc?
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:49 |
|
no, they’ve only done a handful of them. Engine swap vehicles are a tough thing here.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:50 |

Rebuilt, and I'm running Pro Comp 33s and stock drivetrain as far as I know.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 13:50 |

Mmm mmm! So good. It’s okay. My 2wd ‘80 can’t even break 22 anymore. Typically 21.5 mpgs all the time no matter what or where.

6S?

Ooh, what color? I wanted a yellow one, but I decided to get a red HTC instead.

Snap. That sucks. Yours have the I6?
![]() 12/18/2015 at 14:35 |

Blue with a blue Magpul case. I’m planning on upgrading in March. Not enough space for my music and iOS 9 can be kinda slow on it sometimes. But yeah I had an Android (an old Nexus S, I think) before but it kinda sucked. I only had that because it was my Mom’s old phone so I got it for free.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 14:56 |

Yup
![]() 12/18/2015 at 14:56 |

Have you recalibrated your speedo for the bigger tires? Those 33s will certainly cut into your mileage, but I wouldn't expect it to drop below 10. After adjusting, I would imagine around 12-13.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 15:09 |
|
Well, better than the VZ
![]() 12/18/2015 at 15:13 |
|
My bad, they're actually 31s. Either way, I don't know about recalibration. PO had same sized tires.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 15:15 |
|
Check out the diameter compared to the OEM tires, even an inch in extra height can throw your speedo off by 5% or more.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 15:19 |
|
Some have seen upwards of 20mpg with that swap. Having a lot of weight and no power is terrible on gas.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 15:20 |
|
I have pretty much the same vehicle, and I average 11-12. The 3VZE is too little of an engine for what it's in.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 15:25 |
|
its a great engine (the 1fz) but its also a lot of truck.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 17:15 |
|
Ok. I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 17:18 |

Fact! Isn't the VZ iron block? Because if it is then the aluminum 1UZ oughta be a fair bit lighter even with two more cylinders.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 17:19 |
|
Yep, well that's the trade off I guess.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 17:23 |
|
its a tradeoff I can live with.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 17:24 |
|
It is, but it’s also a fair bit lighter than you think. The UZ weighs about the same as an LS1, and that’s 75 pounds heavier than the VZ.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 17:48 |
|
Something to be said for pushrods, though, making a 5.7L V8 weigh about the same as a 4.0, both aluminum block and head.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 18:05 |
|
It’s all in those dimensions. I’d much rather have the 1UZ, since driving a bunch of trucks with LS engines has revealed to me what I originally though: they are cheap forms of extra power, that aren’t really that special.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 18:21 |
|
There were times it took me 2 hours to drive home from school, 35 miles
![]() 12/18/2015 at 18:24 |
|
In the 4Runner, absolutely! But before you go calling LS engines not special, just remember that the LS7 was a thing.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 18:27 |
|
Jeez, how early did you have to wake up??? My school starts at 8:15, so I make it on time if I get out of bed at 7:30.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 18:47 |

Something, something failing valve train.
![]() 12/18/2015 at 18:50 |

The LS7? Really? Why haven't I ever heard of this happening?

Well it was only a few of them, relatively speaking. Doesn't change the fact that it sounds sex.
